Poll Results for Washington State Initiatives

Survey USA has released the results of a KING-TV-sponsored poll on Washington State initiatives I-920, I-933, and I-937. The poll was conducted from Aug 25 to Aug 27th on 969 registered voters. Each initiative was presented as a topic, but without information on what a yes vote means and what a no vote means.

Here are the results:

  • Initiative 920 would repeal the Washington State estate tax. When asked if they were certain to vote yes, certain to vote no, or uncertain, 10% said yes, 22% said no, and 68% were undecided. Here is a graphic.
  • Initiative 933 would affect the way that Washington State government regulates private property. When asked if they were certain to vote yes, certain to vote no, or uncertain, 8% said yes, 25% said no, and 67% were undecided. Here is a graphic.
  • Initiative 937 would require utilities to shift toward green energy sources. When asked if they were certain to vote yes, certain to vote no, or uncertain, 10% said yes, 7% said no, 83% were undecided. Here is a graphic.

These trends are certainly encouraging, with 2:1 voting against I-920, 3:1 voting against 933, and a slight lead for I-937. But the bigger message from this poll is that most people are uncertain on where they stand on all three initiatives.

There is still a big job ahead for the campaigns and counter-campaigns, the media and even blogs in educating voters about these initiatives, and framing how each initiative will affect individuals, communities, and the state.

Update: a new poll for the initiatives is described here.

Update II: an even newer poll for the initiatives is described here.
