Careful for What You Wish for Rep. Boehner

Via Politico:

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Thursday that the day’s tea party rally outside the Capitol is a sign that a “rebellion” is occurring in the United States.

Boehner, who spoke at the rally, made the comment during an online town hall being put on by the Republican National Committee.

“I do think there is a rebellion going on in this country,” Boehner said. “How else could you get 10,000 people to show up with only a few days notice?”

There most certainly is a rebellion going on. But it isn’t against Obama—the most recent national survey gives Obama a 53% approval rating. It isn’t about health care—the same poll shows that 39% favor the current health care legislation and 49% oppose, yet 51% favor a public option to 43% who oppose. In other words, there are many reasons people disagree with health care legislation. Some want no reform, some want just tort reform. Some want single payer. A majority want a government insurance option.

So what is the rebellion over?

In the aftermath of the NY-23 election, the real rebellion is pretty clear: the teabaggers are rebelling against the Republican Party. And I can’t blame them.

After eight years of the worst leadership and executive management this country has ever witnessed, conservatives are pissed off. They are pissed that promises were broken for those eight years, pissed that the disastrous administration put the Democrats in power of both Legislative bodies and the Executive branch, pissed that the Republicans left behind a fiscal crisis unmatched in recent history. The anger has given voice to extremists like Rep. Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin, and Glenn Beck who have, in turn, channeled that anger into a vocal rebellion among the far right of the Republican party and some libertarians.

The most tangible result of this “movement” is that there is one more Democrat and one less Republican in the House of Representatives.

Congress will pass health care reform, they’ll pass CO2 cap-and trade legislation, and they just passed hate-crime legislation. The Teabaggers will grow angrier. The 2010 House and Senate elections are going to be very interesting and a lot of fun!

Finally! Someone actually wrote it in public. I’m tired of all the media talking heads interpreting disapproval in a simplistic, one-dimensional manner.

Whenever I’m polled, I always angst about how to answer approval vs. disapproval questions, because I know they’ll take my “I don’t approve” (of Obama not doing more of what he’s trying to do) and interpret it as “I don’t approve” (of Obama doing any of what he’s trying to do).
