The Clinton Nomination Happens

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

The AP is reporting that Obama really will nominate Sen. Hillary Clinton to be Secretary of State:

Obama’s choice of Hillary Clinton was an extraordinary gesture of goodwill after a year in which the two rivals competed for the Democratic nomination in a long, bitter primary battle.
The two clashed repeatedly on foreign affairs during the 50-state [...]

Minnesota Recount Day 8

Friday, November 28th, 2008

There was, apparently, no counting in the Minnesota recount today, although there was some recounting yesterday (based on figures released yesterday and today). Now, about 86.04% of the recount is completed. And Coleman leads Franken by 1,044,255 to 1,040,285 votes. Coleman has “lost” 1,846 votes versus Franken’s “lost” 1,923 votes [...]

Giving Thanks

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

It is thanksgiving day and I just don’t have my head into blogging. But I would like to take a few moments in the spirit of the day to share with you what I am thankful for.
I am thankful for my partner of 16 years, Kathy, who has indulged me over the last several [...]

Minnesota Recount Day 7

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

On the seventh day of recounting ballots in the Minnesota Senate race, another 5.4% of the ballots were tallied for a grand total of 86.04%. Coleman continues to lead Franken, now by 1,044,255 to 1,040,285 votes. Coleman has “lost” 1,846 votes versus Franken’s “lost” 1,923 votes. This suggests that Franken has, apparently, lost ground [...]

Minnesota Recount Day 6

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

About 80.62% of the Minnesota vote is recounted as of the “close of business” today (cf. 74.18% yesterday). Coleman leads Franken by 978,751 to 976,187 votes. Coleman has “lost” 1,370 votes versus Franken’s “lost” 1,393 votes. This suggests that Franken has gained 23 votes on his starting deficit of [...]

Minnesota Recount Day 5: Franken Slips a Bit

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Last Friday’s recount results from the Minnesota Secretary of State web site showed Franken gaining 48 votes over his starting deficit of 216 votes after the first count. The number of challenged ballots was about the same for each side.
Today’s results from the Minnesota SOS web site shows the count at about [...]

First Big Obama Ssssssssscandal!

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Obama’s first big post-election scandal:

President-elect Barack Obama has yet to attend church services since winning the White House earlier this month, a departure from the example of his two immediate predecessors.
On the three Sundays since his election, Obama has instead used his free time to get in workouts at a Chicago gym.

Oh! My! Gods!

The Minnesota Recount Takes a Holiday

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Elections offices across Minnesota took a day of rest today. The counting-fest will resume Monday.
Meanwhile, the press is picking up on the idea that the Election’s outcome will not be resolved by the recount, per se—that, rather, it will be resolved by decisions about and legal wrangling over the rejected absentee ballots:

In [...]

Minnesota Recount Day 4: Franken Loses Ground to Coleman

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Yesterday’s (Day 3) recount of the Minnesota Senate race showed Sen. Norm Coleman leading Al Franken 751,898 to 723,378. But Franken had gained about 100 votes from his starting deficit of 216 votes
Today’s data dump from the Minnesota SOS web site shows, with 65.65% of the ballots tallied (only about 5% more [...]

Minnesota Recount Day III: Small Gain for Franken—Maybe

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Yesterday with 42.33% of the ballots counted Franken had seemingly cut Coleman original vote-count margin of 216 down to approximately 130 votes. But this is very approximate because Coleman seems likely to gain a few more from the pool of disputed ballots.
The Day 3 recount data from the SOS web site shows [...]

More Gains for Franken on Day 2 of Recount

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

After yesterday’s recount, Sen. Norm Coleman was leading Al Franken by 195,638 to 180,950 . Coleman had lost 70 votes from the initial count of these batches of ballots, and Franken had lost 27 votes. The difference between those two number showed Franken making gains of about 43 votes on his [...]
