3000 Dead U.S. Soldiers

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

As Daniel predicted, 2006 is the year when U.S. fatalities hit the 3,000 mark.
The military has not yet released the soldier’s name, but the three thousandth soldier to die in Iraq died typically:

An improvised explosive device detonated near a Multi-National Division – Baghdad patrol, killing one Soldier in a [...]

The Saddam Hussein Tribunal

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

Yesterday afternoon, after hearing that Saddam Hussein’s execution was imminent, I started writing a piece about the crazy Tribunal system concocted, funded by, and thrust upon the Iraqis. It took about six times longer to write than I initially thought it would.
So pardon me for simply pointing you to the post here.

Friday Night Multimedia Extravaganza!

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Bush is so unpopular, he is out-polled by both Satan and (the late) Saddam Hussein:
Jon Stewart on Chanukah, and Stephen Colbert addresses the war on Chanukah and wishes Jon a Happy “Your Thing.”
Saturday Night Live classic. Fun with Gerald Ford’s (premature) death.
And Chris Matthews calls neocon apologist Karen Hanretty on her bullshit. [...]

King County Journal, R.I.P.

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

The King County Journal is going out of business in less than a month. It’s too bad. Even though it is not a first rate paper, I typically go through the online version every morning. The King County Journal covers stuff in eastern King County that just doesn’t make it in [...]

John Edwards…

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

…he’s in:

Edwards’ impromptu announcement was made in the wake of President Gerald Ford’s death and after his campaign accidentally launched his campaign Web site a day early, then shut it back down.
The campaign Web site’s logo is “John Edwards 08″ and its slogan is “Tomorrow begins today.”

(Especially when you launch a web site early.)
Seriously though, [...]

Ford Dies

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

After dinner tonight I watched the movie The Score with Kathy and several of her visiting family members. Sometime during the early scenes of the movie, Gerald Ford died.
And tonight it’s snowing in Redmond, Washington.

Coincidence?
Um…yeah, probably.

The Cost of Fear

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

The Bush administration took us to war under the pretense that Iraq had banned WMD (it didn’t), that Iraq was somehow associated with terrorism (it wasn’t), and that Democracy would sweep through the Middle East with a “free Iraq” (it hasn’t).

Even though there has never been a substantive, pre-invasion connection between al Qaeda and Iraq [...]

James Brown, 1933–2006

Monday, December 25th, 2006

Several days ago he was handing out toys for Christmas in his home town. And this morning James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, the inventor of Funk, is dead at the age of 73.
Here is a remarkable performance by a 71 year old Brown of his hit It’s a [...]

Award-winning ABC

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

Media Matters for America, a progressive media watchdog, has given out its end of the year awards. This year, ABC earns the uncoveted Misinformer of the Year:

This year saw ABC air The Path to 9/11, a two-part miniseries that placed the blame for the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the Clinton administration and [...]

GOP Implosion

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

I guess it was bound to happen, and it looks like Liddy Dole is going to be the fall guy:

President Bush’s low approval ratings, the unpopular war on Iraq, voter concern about corruption and Democratic fundraising all figured in the GOP loss of Senate control in last month’s elections. But among Republicans, long-hidden tensions are [...]

What’s their problem?
I’ve already done this for them here.
Sheesh!

Holiday Travel Blues

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

KING 5 has a story discussing travel challenges for the holidays:

Holiday travel across the mountain passes could be difficult this coming weekend because heavy snow is again expected.
The snow advisory for Thursday night in the mountains has been cancelled, but if you are crossing the passes earlier is better than later because another storm is [...]

Maleng Saves

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Norm Maleng won’t seek the death penalty for Naveed Haq. Haq is the man accused of shooting six and killing one person at the Seattle Jewish Center last summer.
Maleng’s decision is clearly the correct one. It was clear within a few days of the shooting that Haq is mentally ill. [...]

Why Can’t We Fail?

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Newly minted Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said yesterday:

As the president has made clear, we simply cannot afford to fail in the Middle East. Failure in Iraq at this juncture would be a calamity that would haunt our nation, impair our credibility and endanger Americans for decades to come.

Haunt our nation. Indeed.
Impair our [...]
