Joyriding Jihad

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

From KING5:

GIG HARBOR, Wash. – Two men are in hot water after taking a joyride on the runway of a Pierce County airport Saturday night.
Police say it appears the two, in their early 20s, had been drinking as they jumped in the car and took it for a spin in a place they [...]

For Whom the Tolls Bill

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Having grown up using the Illinois toll roads, I really hate tolls. But I hate traffic jams, pot holes, unsafe highways, collapsed highway infrastructure, and sinking floating bridges even worse than tolls. So, perhaps this solution to funding our regional transportation infrastructure will grow on me.

A report prepared at the direction [...]

In which I Become a Bus Commuter

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Since moving to Redmond, Washington in 1999, I have always felt a little guilty about the fact that I commute by car to my job at the University of Washington in Seattle. I am “part of the problem” for this region and, really, the world. My guilt hasn’t been lessened by knowing [...]

Saturday, November 12th, 2005

Let’s face it. The Alaska Way Viaduct (AWV) is ugly and noisy. It seriously detracts from the aesthetics of the Seattle waterfront. A stroll from the upper city streets down to the waterfront includes traversing the unsightly bit under the viaduct. I’ve never liked it.
Now we have a chance [...]

Troll Booth

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

About a month ago, I had the chance to visit with Washington State Senator Ed Murray, who represents Seattle (43rd district) and is the Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee. I asked him about possible legislative responses if initiative 912 (rollback of the gas tax increase) passes next fall.
One possibility is to change [...]

An Alfa Male’s Pursuit

For the next week or so, the roadways in and around Bellevue, Washington will be sprinkled with Italian beauties. From July 28 to July 31, the national convention of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club will be held at the Bellevue Doubletree hotel. The event is dubbed Alfa Potlatch Unfortunately, I leave town [...]
